Unlocking the Taroom Trough: Queensland's next chapter in domestic gas
I recently attended a strong and timely Queensland Energy Club presentation by Trevor Brown of Omega Oil and Gas Limited, "Unlocking the Taroom Trough: New Domestic Gas and Queensland's Energy Future."
The session landed on the same day Omega released Canyon-3's positive appraisal results, reinforcing the momentum building around the Taroom Trough and its role in Queensland's emerging unconventional energy landscape.
From a subsurface and broader energy-system perspective, several points stood out.
Energy security is a structural challenge
Energy security remains one of Australia's most pressing structural challenges. For the eastern states, constrained future supply is no longer a theoretical risk. Recent disruptions to global LNG and crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz have highlighted just how exposed Australia is to external shocks.
Conventional production is in long-term decline
Conventional production has been in structural decline in Australia for some time. The long-term fall in domestic output and investment continues to shape the strategic choices available to industry and government.
Queensland is the outlier
Queensland is the only eastern state actively enabling, supporting and co-investing in new supply pathways. Policy alignment matters, and Queensland is demonstrating what that looks like in practice.
The next tranche of supply will be unconventional
That shift is already well underway:
- deeper Cooper Basin targets
- coal seam gas
- the Beetaloo Sub-basin and the Taroom Trough moving forward
The Taroom Trough is notable not only for its geology but for the strength of Queensland Government support, positioning it as a future source of unconventional oil as well as gas.
A pivotal phase for the basin
For Omega Oil and Gas, and for the other operators progressing work in the Taroom Trough, this is a pivotal phase. The basin is emerging as one of the most meaningful and exciting new energy opportunities for eastern Australia, with the potential to reshape the region's long-term supply outlook.
